New Urbanism and Beyond - Designing Cities for the Future.

New Urbanism addresses the failure of sprawling, soulless modern cities and advocates a return to small town urban forms which include such qualities as human scale, friendly spaces, walkable streets, community centres, and streets of shops. It shows how cities can thrive in the modern era.

Images that Injure

Images that Injure; Pictorial Stereotypes in the Media

303.385 IMA-L3

This interesting book presents a series of original research essays on how minority groups are portrayed in the media in a stereotypical, detrimental and degrading way. Groups discussed include gays, lesbians, the physically disabled, and African Americans as well as others. The book looks at portrayal in a number of mediums such as advertising, film, television, the internet and other media. As media presentations of stereotypes can be subtle and not obvious, it means that it is all the more insidious. For example a mainstream newspaper in portraying images of the annual gay pride march, will typically seek to publish an image of a naked or semi naked man with sexual bondage equipment, even though he is not typical of most participants in the parade.
The book offers creative ideas on how these groups can be presented in an alternative, fair and life enhancing way.
